Power generation with SCR technology

The 02/05/2011

Volvo Penta has introduced a very powerful 16-litre diesel engine for power generation applications. The new TWD1663GE is rated at 685 kWm and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) characteristics to comply with strict EPA and CARB emission limits for level 4i.

'The TWD1663GE was developed to be a primary and backup power product in the 550-625 kWm range,' said Phil Gaynor, Chief Executive Officer of Volvo Penta's industrial engine in North America.'This power node allows us to extend our high-end 16L line product model into the fast growing early electricity market, where single, double and triple generator systems are becoming very popular. This product has mainly been developed for power generation applications for OEM on the North American market.'

SCR technology

The TWD1663GE uses Volvo's SCR technology. This technology is being successfully used on Volvo engines for off-road applications as well as for Volvo and Mack Trucks. RCS does not require any immobilisation for regeneration as service intervals have decreased compared to the current Volvo engine programme. It does not increase the amount of cooling capacity required, resulting in a system that is easy to install also in limited space.

Powerful software package

The TWD1663GE is based on the proven TWD1643GE engine and has world class power density and load acceptance due to the two turbo load. Output power for backup power applications is at 625kWe. This output is optimal for generator manufacturers choosing to link a generator to several sets as well as offering 1.25 MW, 1.875 MW and 2.5 MW block power to their customers.

'The Volvo Penta TWD1663GE is the most powerful engine in our GE-product range,' says Hans Mathiasson, Product Management at Volvo Penta Department'It offers impressive power density and impressive load acceptance with the two turbo charger. In addition, it provides excellent energy efficiency. With the advantage of the resolution, we are able to retain all the efficiency without adding more cooling packages or reducing kilowatts production levels.'

The TWD1663GE is only available for 1800 rpm / 60 Hz.
